A covered performance shed now stands at the south end of the 6240 Main Street lot in downtown Stouffville, with picnic tables, planters and young trees set out in front of the 55+ Club. In summer it was new. This November it hosts its first holiday market. On November 2, Rabcon Contractors' crews are scheduled to begin the first stretch of a Main Street rebuild at the Park Drive corner, and the project is expected to run until December 2028.

The festive dates and the construction share the same few blocks. They don't share the same days. The two big holiday events fall on Friday evenings and Saturdays. Under the Town's notice, construction runs Monday through Friday. If you head north from Swan Lake Village for the market or the parade, the roadwork will mostly stay out of your way. A Tuesday afternoon errand on Main Street near Park Drive is the trip that changes.

A plaza built on a parking lot, in its first winter

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville officially opened the Urban Plaza on August 12, 2026, at 6240 Main Street, next to the Village mural and the 55+ Club. According to the Town's downtown plaza page, it has shaded flexible seating, picnic-style tables, a games and activity area, trees and planters, and a covered performance shed that works as a small stage. The Town said the space is meant for community programming and small cultural performances, and to bring people downtown to nearby shops and restaurants.

The plaza took up ground that used to be something else. A November 2025 report from Stouffville Bulletpoint News placed it in the southern part of the 6240 Main Street parking lot, in front of the 55+ Club. The Town still lists a 6240 Main Street Lot among its municipal parking permit locations, along with the Park Drive South Lot.

The plaza is part of a larger plan. In September, the Stouffville Review reported that Councillor Hugo T. Kroon pointed to the Urban Plaza and planned work at the clock tower as signs of where downtown is heading. He described it to the paper this way:

"If your only intention is to shop, there are other alternatives, but if your attention is to browse and peruse, and enjoy the ambiance of a functioning and functional downtown, get to restaurants, sit out in the sun, and watch the world go by, that's what downtowns are morphing into."

The plaza is the first finished piece of that plan, and it opens its first winter just as the second piece starts.

The roadwork starts at the Park Drive corner

On October 22, the Town posted a construction notice. The Downtown Revitalization Project begins November 2, 2026. Rabcon Contractors Limited won the contract, and completion is expected by December 2028. The first stage runs November 2 to December 23, on Main Street between Park Drive and roughly 100 metres east of it. Crews will extend a storm sewer and restore the road.

The notice lists what that stretch will be like while crews are there:

  • Temporary lane closures in stages, with periodic delays
  • Work Monday through Friday during permitted working hours, with advance notice if overnight work or road closures are needed
  • No on-street parking within the active construction zone
  • Pedestrian access maintained, though routes may shift around the work
  • Access to homes and businesses maintained whenever possible
  • More noise, dust and vibration from excavation

The bigger picture matters for anyone who plans to use downtown Stouffville over the next two years. The Stouffville Review reported that the first major construction phase covers Main Street from Park Drive to Edward Street. The Stouffville Review reported that the work replaces aging water, storm and sanitary pipes under Main Street, and that it will be phased to avoid full road closures, with temporary route changes along the way. The Town says it will post the date of a public open house soon.

How the holiday calendar and the work week line up

Put the Town's own dates side by side and the season falls into place:

  1. Monday, November 2: first-stage construction begins at Park Drive.
  2. Friday, November 20, 5 to 9 p.m.: Holiday Market, night one.
  3. Saturday, November 21, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.: Holiday Market, day two.
  4. Saturday, December 5, 6 p.m.: Santa Claus Parade, Ninth Line to Park Drive.
  5. Wednesday, December 23: first stage scheduled to wrap up.

The construction crews have the weekdays. The festive events have the Friday evening and the two Saturdays. Two of the three big dates fall on Saturdays, outside the notice's Monday to Friday work week, and the market's Friday session doesn't open until 5 p.m.

One caution on dates. The Town's "12 Days of Cheer" roundup page lists the market as November 21 and 22 and the parade as December 6. The Town's dedicated pages for each event give November 20 and 21 and December 5, and those are the dates used here. Check the Holiday Market page before you head out.

November 20 and 21 at 6240 Main Street

The Town lists the market at 6240 Main Street and Civic Square, with local artisan vendors, a main-stage music program, free rides, light installations, and food and drink. The Stouffville Review reported that many of the festivities will take place outside the 55+ Club at the newly opened plaza, and that the first night opens with the annual tree lighting and a visit from Santa Claus. Attractions Ontario lists the tree lighting for 7 p.m. that Friday at 6240 Main Street. The Town's roundup page puts it on November 21, so confirm with the Town before you plan your evening around it.

The two days suit different outings. Friday runs four hours, all after dark, with the lighting ceremony and the light installations at their best. Saturday runs eight hours, starting at 11 a.m., with daylight for browsing the vendors and a late afternoon that turns into evening by the 7 p.m. close.

The plaza is also why this year's market has a new centre. Until this summer, the south end of the 6240 lot was set aside for the plaza's construction. Now it has a covered stage and fixed seating beside the 55+ Club, and the market is built around it. Our earlier post on the building behind the clock tower covers the indoor side of Stouffville's November calendar, which runs alongside the outdoor market.

December 5, when the parade ends at the work zone

The Town lists the Santa Claus Parade for Saturday, December 5, at 6 p.m., running along Main Street from Ninth Line to Park Drive. Park Drive is also the western edge of the first construction stage, so the parade ends at the corner where crews will have spent five weeks working.

The Town has planned for that. Its road closures page says construction equipment will be removed from the area for the parade on Saturday, December 5. The stage-one schedule continues for almost three weeks after that, so the parade route will run through the same stretch while the roadwork is still in progress.

The weekday trip is the one that changes

The festive outings are on track. Ordinary weekday trips downtown are where the work will be felt. Between November 2 and December 23, someone driving into the Park Drive end of Main Street on a weekday can expect lane closures in stages, possible delays, and no curbside parking along the active stretch. Sidewalks stay open, though the walking route may move around the work. The Town's two downtown lots, at 6240 Main Street and Park Drive South, are listed as municipal parking locations.

Elsewhere downtown, the Town's general three-hour limit on on-street parking between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. doesn't apply on Downtown Main Street. That matters on the market's Friday night and the parade's Saturday evening, wherever the curb isn't closed for construction.

The long-term plan adds parking back. After hearing from local businesses and residents, including at sessions at the Stouffville Leisure Centre this past summer, planners restored on-street parking in the village area to 76 spaces. The earlier design had 42. That's almost twice the curb space the draft offered, on the stretch of Main Street that leads to the new plaza, and it arrives once the project wraps up in 2028.

For Swan Lake Village, this winter's Stouffville calendar runs on the weekend schedule, picking up from the summer concerts and the fall orchards. November 20, November 21 and December 5 fall on a Friday evening and two Saturdays, at the edges of the Monday to Friday construction week or outside it.
